Introducing Tables to Second-Grade Elementary Students in an Algebraic Thinking Context

نویسندگان

چکیده

In this study, we adopted a functional perspective on algebra. Our focus was tables and how they were first used by second-grade elementary school students (7- 8-year-olds) when working with functions. This qualitative, exploratory, descriptive study consisted of five classroom sessions two semi-structured interviews, one group individual, weeks apart, focused tasks involving different functions uses tables, without labels for headings. ask the following research questions: How do children organise values in or (a priori) headings? What are regularities (structures) identified students? data revealed that able to variables listing them columns labelling headings (i.e., identifying involved). The ways which organised enabled us identify structures as between involved More correctly second interview compared first.

Developing a model to enhance elementary teachers’ ability to foster functional thinking and algebraic reasoning in elementary students

Abstract: This study explores the process of change of grades 3 to 5 elementary teachers, who participated in a professional development program "Algebraic Thinking: Foundation of Elementary Mathematics". Algebraic thinking as a functional thinking was the centerpiece of the program. The “Concern Base Adaptation Model” (CBAM) was used as methodology. The results of the study showed the signific...

Assessing Elementary Students’ Functional Thinking Skills: the Case of Function Tables

Functional thinking is an appropriate way to introduce algebraic concepts in elementary school. We have developed a framework for assessing and interpreting students’ level of understanding of functional thinking using a construct modeling approach. An assessment was administered to 231 secondthrough sixth-grade students. We then developed a progression of functional thinking knowledge. This in...

Simplfying Statistical Tables for Students in Elementary Courses

Students in practical statistics and probability courses must learn to use tables of standard statistical distributions. Those provided in elementary textbooks vary considerably in format, both between books and also between distributions within books. The table presented in this paper is designed to reduce the confusion students often have in obtaining normal probabilities and percentiles. Com...

Developing Seventh Grade Students’ Systems Thinking Skills in the Context of the Human Circulatory System

Developing systems thinking skills in school can provide useful tools to deal with a vast amount of medical and health information that may help learners in decision making in their future lives as citizen. Thus, there is a need to develop effective tools that will allow learners to analyze biological systems and organize their knowledge. Here, we examine junior high school students' systems th...

Second grade elementary school students ’ differing performance on combine , change and compare word problems Anton

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the word problem solving skills of 47 secondgrade students by examining how they performed on combine, change and compare word problems. The results of the repeated measures ANOVA showed that students scored significantly lower on compare problems than on combine and change word problems. Based on the results of this study, we disproved the hy...
